CERT EXERCISES - 2008

JANUARY 28, 2008 - EXERCISE

The Spartanburg County CERT program held its first exercise of 2008 on January 28th.  We had 13 people graduate from the CERT program.  Two of these 13 graduates were Teen CERT.  Since this was our first graduation/exercise in several months, it was a little bit of an adjustment for us.  However, we got through it and finished the exercise under 4 hours.  I would like to thank our 15 CERT Graduates (see CERT Graduates), Cherise Crosby, Steve Brown, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien, Bill Leeder, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate, William Culver, Ted Button, and Matt Andrews for coming out.  In addition, I would like to thank Rev. Tom Baker for inviting us to Mayo First Baptist Church.  Without his support and the continued assistance of our volunteers, we could not have conducted this exercise.  Even though Doug Nissley was not present, Steve Brown and Debbie Tate managed to take some pictures.  We hope you enjoy them.

FEBRUARY 23, 2008 - EXERCISE

The Spartanburg County CERT program held its second exercise of 2008 on February 23rd.  Overall, we had 29 people graduate from the CERT program, 10 of whom were TEEN CERT.  I would like to thank the following people/organizations: Our 29 CERT Graduates (see CERT Graduates), Boiling Springs Baptist Church, Boy Scouts of America, Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown, Cherise Crosby, Doug Nissley (took the pictures), Richard McAbee, William Culver, Bill Leeder, Dana Leeder, and Derrick Bailey.  Without their support, we would not have pulled this exercise off.  Following the exercise, we organized both trailers and left ESA around 7:00pm.  I cannot thank Bob, Barb, Steve, Doug, and Richard enough for assisting.  Thanks to them we have two deployable trailers.  For pictures of the exercise, please click on the link above.  We hope you like them.

MAY 10, 2008 - EXERCISE / SCOUT DAY

This was CERT's second year participating in Scout Day.  Unlike last year, CERT was not only running a PR booth, we were also running several training stations for our graduation class.  The stations addressed the following CERT subject areas: Cribbing, Triaging, Bandaging, and Basic First Aid (with an emphasis on Head to Toe Assessments).  Fire suppression and search and Rescue had already been addressed and demonstrated in the previous classes.

Authorities are taking precautions against a threat of a dirty bomb in the Upstate.

Nearly 70 local, state and federal agencies spent the day at the Spartanburg Fairgrounds acting out a "dirty bomb" exercise on Saturday.

They planned for what they think they would do if three large bombs were set off simultaneously in different cities and medical facilities were swamped with injured people.

More than 300 people were involved in drill.
