The Spartanburg County CERT program held its first exercise of 2007 on February 10th. We had 18 people graduate from the CERT program. Three of the 18 graduates were Teen CERT graduates. Since this was our first graduation/exercise in several months, it was a little bit of an adjustment for us. However, once we got started, it was like clockwork. During the actual exercise, Arif Chaudhary and Richard McAbee were kind enough to install shelving in the CERT trailer. I cannot thank them enough (especially Mr. McAbee for supplying the shelving). In addition, I would like to thank Cherise Crosby, Douglas Martin, Steve Brown, Barbara Grudzien, and Bob Grudzien for coming out. Without their continued assistance, we could not conduct successful exercises. While I'm no Doug Nissley, I hope you enjoy the pictures I took. | |||||

thanks again Ted for a job well done. Overall, this was our most realistic
exercise and I feel everyone enjoyed their exercise experience.
Thanks again to everyone who made it happen and to the Media for coming
out to cover it (News Channel 7 & Fox 21). I hope everyone enjoys
the pictures Doug Nissley and Steve Brown took.
In
addition, we
would like to thank Channel 7(WSPA), 21 (WHNS) and 62 (WYCW) for airing
stories about the exercise. If you missed these stories, we have
our video taped versions below.

their surge capacities. Therefore, they asked for CERT's assistance.

Overall, we had 17 CERT

exercises this year and it was a pleasant change. When the class
went through their work stations, Richard McAbee and I worked on the
trailer. Afterwards, Richard, Steve, Bill, Bob, Barb, and I
continued to work on the trailer. I would like to especially thank
Richard McAbee for providing the shelving. Also, I would like to
thank Bill and Bob and doing so much work on the trailer. In
addition, Barb and Bobby came out and helped us finish the project up.
All in all, it was a long day, yet a great one.
I would like to thank
the following people for participating in the July CERT Training Session:
Our 4 CERT Graduates (see CERT
Graduates), Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown, Tracey Wert (& Kids) and Tommy Wert
Overall, this was a good
exercise for a very small class. I would like to thank everyone who
made it possible. With that said, we are looking forward to a great
class this upcoming October.
I would like to thank
the following people for participating in the November CERT Full Scale
Exercise:
Our 7 CERT Graduates (see CERT
Graduates), the 26 kids who participated as victims, Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown,
Bill Leeder, Marge Woodruff, Doug Nissley, Joe Tonkovic, Matt Andrews,
Michael Murphy, Cherise Crosby, Chantella Crosby, AJ Crosby, LJ Crosby,
Teresa Foster, Marie Chaney, Tim Jamison, Brian Brown, Matthew
Christopher, Elaine Kennedy, Dawn Shinkar, Rick Isaac, Kari Isaac,
William Culver, Sam Etheredge, Nancy Wasness, Doug Martin, Marta Batche,
Bobby Abercrombie, Lisa Abercrombie and Holly Mitchem.
Overall, we had 38 CERT members respond
(including graduates) to the detonation of an explosive ordinance.
This detonation was the result of numerous acts of terrorism that
occurred around the County. Since no biological, radiological, or
chemical ordinances were suspected at this location, the Spartanburg
County CERT Team was asked to assess the scene, using extreme caution
and care. With suspected unexploded ordinances on scene, the vast
majority of CERT members used extreme caution in this environment.
However, we lost one CERT member due to an explosion. Luckily, the
rest of the team remained intact.
When the exercise concluded, four unfortunate
souls were in the morgue (2 were tagged deceased, one victim was left
unattended until he passed, and one CERT member got blew up).
Unlike exercises in the past, this exercise was not preplanned.
Therefore, everyone was acting on instinct and not a script. While
opinions vary on this methodology, most of the exercise participants
felt this worked very well. All assignments, staging, etc was done
on the fly which added to the realism of the exercise.
