CERT EXERCISES - 2006

APRIL 6, 2006 - EXERCISE

Deputy Micah Horton, Robbie Swofford, and Kathy Hurry took some great pictures during our fourth CERT exercise.  This exercise marked the first time we used the newly acquired Rescue Randy's at ESA.  Needles to say, that was quiet an experience and luckily we caught it on camera.  These pics are a must see!!

APRIL 8, 2006 - EXERCISE

We would like to thank the N.C. Search & Rescue Dog Association, Croft Fire Department, and the Croft State Park Rangers for making this exercise possible. This was the first time our CERT team ever participated in a full-scale exercise involving multiple response agencies. Despite a few communication glitches, the exercise was a huge success,

For those who are not familiar with the exercise scenario, the CERT team was responding to a 10-passenger plane crash in Croft State Park. The emergency locator transmitter malfunctioned on the plane. Due to the malfunction, we only knew the general area of the plane crash. Therefore, we broke into four separate teams, and the search commenced.

We would like to thanks B.C. Banks for creating this scenario. He put a lot of time and effort in planning this out. In addition, we would like to thank Chief Hayes for his efforts and the Park Rangers for allowing us to use the park. Despite thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches, etc, we had a good turn out. We would like to thank everyone who participated and our local media (Channel 7, Channel 21, and the Spartanburg Herald Journal) for taking the time to cover it. Thank you so much.

JUNE 10, 2006 - EXERCISE

This was our fifth exercise at ESA. Every time we take lessons learned and try to make the next exercise better. This exercise marked the first time we used an actual wall for our cribbing exercise. I would like to thank Bob Grudzien for helping make the CERT wall. He done a great job. In addition to the CERT wall, we tried to incorporate several fog machines into our exercise efforts. However, the absence of any fog fluid prevented us from doing so. So, for those who have already graduated, feel free to join us on July 15th and we should have fog. Despite the lack of fog, we had a great exercise. I would especially like to thanks Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown, and Arif Chaudhary for helping make this exercise possible. Feel free to check out some of the pictures we took of our 5th graduating CERT class running through the CERT exercise drills.

JULY 15, 2006 - EXERCISE

Our sixth CERT exercise/graduation was another first.  This exercises marked the first time we had a CERT wall, Fog Machines, and an adequate number of water extinguishers.  We feel these exercises are preparing us for our full scale exercise in September.  I would like to thank Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown, Bruce Hurry, Arif Chaudhary, and James Westmoreland (NSAFD) for their support.  In addition, I would like to thank our past graduates who took the time to do a refresher.  Every CERT member is invited and encouraged to participate in any exercise we conduct.  I hope you enjoy the pictures and if you haven't sign up for CERT, please sign up today!!

AUGUST 19, 2006 - EXERCISE

This was our seventh (lucky number 7) and largest CERT exercise/graduation.  In addition, this was our best exercise to date.  The teams rotated perfectly, each station offered a new challenge, and every team was enthusiastic about the exercise.  I would like to thank the CERT class, our past members who came for additional training, and our instructors for their tremendous efforts.  Without the continual assistance of Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, and Steve Brown, we could not pull these exercises off.  In addition, I would like to thank Bob and Barb for bringing live victims to the exercise.  This gave our exercise another added dimension.  We are looking forward to another great class in September and our full scale exercise is on September 30.  I hope you enjoy the pictures and if you haven't sign up for CERT, please do so today!!

SEPTEMBER 21, 2006 - EXERCISE

The Spartanburg County CERT Team held their 8th CERT exercise and only our second Thursday night exercise.  Since we only had two hours to prepare and not enough equipment for everyone, I think we did very well.  The class did not complain about the change in schedule and seemed to enjoy the exercise experience.  They are all invited back to our Oct 18th exercise.  We plan to have equipment for them and a better exercise laid out.

OCTOBER 4, 2006 - EXERCISE

Team Carolina asked the Spartanburg County CERT team to participate in the GSP full scale exercise as victims.  Twenty-two CERT members spent Wednesday night being dragged from hospital to hospital.  I would like to acknowledge and thank the following people for participating: Bob Grudzien, Amber Grudzien, Bryan Grudzien, Kathy Hurry, Steve Brown, Bill Leeder, Karri Isaac, Rick Isaac, Marta Batche, Mr. Batche, Doug Nissley, Arif Chadhary, Renee Patton, Shirley Williams, Teresa Foster, Stephanie Wright, Richard McAbee, Bill Bomar, Michael Brooks, Lynn Lamb, and Louis Tibbs

Steve Brown took the pictures you see in our gallery.  I will try and acquire more of then in the near future.  Until then, only a few CERT members are represented in this gallery.

OCTOBER 26, 2006 - EXERCISE

The Spartanburg County CERT Team held their 9th CERT exercise and only our third Thursday night exercise.  Since we had more time to prepare for this exercise, we were able to incorporate more into this exercise.  While we had another equipment shortage, our class did not complain. ProPac provided us some basic equipment and the exercise went very well.  We now have equipment and plan to distribute it to all of our recent CERT graduates by November 18th.  We would like to thank our recent graduates for being patient and we look forward to seeing them at future CERT functions. In addition, I would like to thank Doug Nissley for taking some great pictures and Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Steve Brown, Bobby Grudzien, Samuel Etheridge, Johnny Tucker, Brian Amburgey, and Bryan Wilson for assisting with the exercise.

NOVEMBER 18, 2006 - FULL SCALE EXERCISE

The Spartanburg County CERT program held its third full scale exercise on November 18th. Thirty-four CERT members showed up for this exercise. I would like to thank everyone who made an effort to come out and participate. We were very fortunate to receive good media coverage for this event. I would like to thank Steve Brown, Bob Grudzien, Kathy Hurry, Bruce Hurry, and Bill Leeder for assisting with the exercise. I hope you enjoy the awesome pictures Doug Nissley took at the exercise. He's quickly becoming our official CERT Photographer. In addition to Doug, we would like to thank thank Channel 7(WSPA), 21 (WHNS) and 62 (WYCW) for airing stories about the exercise.  If you missed these stories, we have our video taped versions below.
