CERT Assist with Santa Fun Run 5k

DART runs 4 day Pet Shelter

Here is a quick synopsis of CERT’s Disaster Animal Response Team’s Involvement in Pet Sheltering at the Hurricane Emergency Shelter from 10/6 to 10/10.

• The Animal shelter was initially set-up on Thursday morning from 11-1 – Myself, along with Dr Kevin Elliott and Jamie Nelson assisted
• Beginning at 6:30pm on Thursday we began to man the shelter and did so until Monday. By Monday at 7:30pm we were leaving High Point Academy with our last trailer and our local ARC cots
• During the activation, we administered shelter to 20 dogs and 4 cats. Our highest capacity level at one time was 17
• With an unexpected 3 hour surge in pets, precautionary measures were taken and Greenville Animal Care was kind enough to loan out 48 xl cratesplus dog treats/snacks – While we only utilized 4 of them it was much appreciated – In addition they provided a food donation, as did Pet Smart, that was utilized during the activation
• For the duration of the shelter we had great volunteer support. Counting setup all the way to tear down, the number of CERT DART volunteers who contributed their time were: 33 (2 were vets)
• From the time it officially opened to the time demobilization completed, it was a 4 + day activation

First, a special thanks to our awesome volunteers who assisted, Greenville Animal Care for helping us in your time of need, our Vet support, High Point Academy for letting us use their Drama Theater Class, Pet Smart for their initial Pet Food donation, and those in the community who brought food/toys. Thank you again everyone and to see some pics, click here: https://www.facebook.com/spartanburgcert/posts/10153364768177168

CERT at Inman Harvest Day

On September 24 CERT once again coordinated the effort of the 7th ever Community Emergency Preparedness Day while also organizing the Harvest Day 5k for the Inman Chamber of Commerce.  With both events the CERT program did a terrific job and should be proud of their efforts.  This was the largest Harvest Day 5k to date and the best attended Community Emergency Preparedness Day ever.

Council Recognizes SCSAR and Support

On August 15th Spartanburg County Council recognized SCSAR for a search in  Chester County.  Once again, to learn more about our Search and Rescue Division of CERT visit www.spartanburgsar.org.  Needless to say, our SAR division was honored as was our Support Division that was recognized at the September 19th Council meeting for the 9/7 support call to assist Poplar Springs and numerous other agencies.  While we don't do what we do for recognition to have agencies reach out to our Administration and make them aware of our efforts is a huge honor and we thank you.

Recent Support Activations

On September 7 and September 21 CERT assisted Poplar Springs and numerous other Fire Departments on a Support Services call at a pallet yard off Freyes Dr.  The initial Support Call was much larger while the second one was contained faster and didn't require as many resources/personnel.  On both responses, great job by all.

Three Support Services Activations in three days

July 16-18, 2016 - A busy few days for CERT Support Services - At the Autumn Park Apartments Fire we were just assigned the task of getting tables and chairs in place for the Red Cross to conduct casework - On Monday we did a limited support service call out (iced drinks and food) to a Pole Barn Fire in Inman and an unfortunate drowning at Lake Lyman - Please keep the families of those impacted by the fire and the family of the teenager who lost his life in your thoughts/prayers - For those who responded to all of these events, an awesome job done by all

Greer Freedom Blast

For the second year we had over 20 CERT members assist the City of Greer with Freedom Blast and overall, it was a successful mission.  We directed traffic at crosswalks, manned barricades, updated our SAR equipment and much more.  A special thanks to everyone who braved the heat on a very very hot day.

Two Support Services Activations in two days

On Tuesday support services was requested briefly at the Celanese HazMat incident and on Wednesday it was requested for a wreck on B-I85.  Fortunately, both incidents had very minimal impact on traffic or their surrounding areas.  All in all, great job by our Support Services who didn't have their normal trailer response due to it being upgraded in NC.

Youth Stop Graduation - 3rd CERT Class of Year

We had the privilege of teaching Basic CERT to a group of awesome Youth Stop kids.  This is was of our more enjoyable classes and we feel the kids enjoyed the extra effort we put into it being fun.  All in all, great group and we look forward to doing it again next summer.

NDMS Exercise

Over 20 CERT members about about a dozen Ham Radio operators assisted NDMS with their exercise drill at GSP.  Despite a few glitches in getting actors for patients, our group did an awesome job.  Most of our resources were utilized in the gooseneck, our DART team was activated, several of our members were litter bearers/patients, and everyone came together to offer support where needed.  All we can say is great job everyone!

CERT Offers Support at both Relay Events:

This year CERT continued their tradition of offering support to both North Spartanburg Relay and Relay of Spartanburg.  We had a great volunteer turnout and as always, worked together as a team to address our assigned tasks.  Great job everyone and fue to our teamwork, we continue to save Relay for Life on the contractual cost they once had prior to our partnership (now a decade long):

First Support Services Activation - Reidville - 4/18

On 4/18, Spartanburg Support Services spent several hours at a house fire ofering support to numerous fire departments on-scene.  We can't say enough about our CERT volunteers.  Great job all all involved.

First CERT Graduation of 2016

Our first Basic CERT class is in the books with 41 completing Basic CERT training.  This brings our grand total trained to 1,204 since August 2005.  A special thank to all of our volunteers and our citizens who have made this possible.
