SPECIAL EVENTS - 2010

1/9, 1/23, 2/6, 3/27, & 8/21 - CONCEALED WEAPONS CLASS

Over a 4 weekend period, over 50 people (CERT and North Spartanburg FD) completed the concealed weapons course.  Danny Watkins, instructor and fellow CERT member, did a superb job teaching this class.  I would like to thank Danny and all of the participants.  Doug Nissley took photos from several of these classes.  I hope you enjoy them.

2/11/09 - SEARCH & RESCUE IN-SERVICE

Lauren Landis with SCSARDA and our own CERT program, taught a nice introduction course to the SARTECH II Class.  Lauren discussed what was expected of students and those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the class.

2/16 - 2/25 - FIRST RESPONDER REFRESHER

Bob re-taught our first class of First Responders for 3 days per week, for two consecutive weeks.  Needless to say, these are our CERT veterans and I'm pleased to report that the vast majority of those who attended the original First Responder class, took the refresher.

3/2/10 - BLS CPR RECERTIFICATION

On 3/2, around 10 CERT members got recertified in BLS CPR/FIRST AID.  All of our CERT members, who have received first responder, are asked to recertify their cards every 2 years.

3/6/10 - SEARCH & RESCUE - KINGS MOUNTAIN IN-SERVICE

Several CERT members made the trip up to Kings Mountain for a fun day of orienteering.  Those who attended this exercise, thoroughly enjoyed it.  I would like to thanks SCSARDA for the invite.  We look forward to strengthening our relationship with SCSARDA in the months and years ahead.

4/17/10 - ARC SHELTER EXERCISE

Several CERT members participated in the Red Cross shelter exercise.  Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the event.

4/17/10 - HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY

CERT once again provided a Rehab area for another Household Hazardous Waste Day.  Like the last event, it was a huge success all around.  Thanks to all of the CERT members who volunteered.  At the event, Robert McKee took some pictures.  I hope you enjoy them.

4/30/10 - RELAY FOR LIFE - NORTH SPARTANBURG

For the third consecutive year CERT done sanitation duties at Relay for North Spartanburg.  Also, at this Relay event, CERT debuted their newly acquired Gator.  The Gator proved to be very beneficial.  With that said, I would like to thank the following CERT members who came out and assisted:

Tony Craig, Tim Jamison, Robert McKee, Angela Miller, Doug Nissley, Beverly Tonkovic, and Robin Tonkovic.  During this event, Doug and Robert took some pictures.  I hope you enjoy them.

5/2 - 5/3 - SPRING FLING

As last year, CERT was asked to do traffic control and barricade watch again.  Once again, everyone did a superb job.  With that said, I would like to thank the following CERT members for volunteering: Christie Blanton, Thomas Brown, Steve Caldwell, Arif Chaudhary, AJ Crosby, Chantella Crosby, Cherise Crosby, DJ Crosby, LJ Crosby, Tony Craig, Bob Grudzien, Barbara Grudzien, Ben Grudzien, Bobby Grudzien, Sam Etheredge, Ed Jarrett, Robert McKee, Doug Nissley, and Kristina Robertson.  During this event, Doug Nissley took several pics.  We hope you enjoy them.

5/8/10 - SCSARDA & CERT EXERCISE

For the first time this year, CERT and SCSARDA participated in a mock search.  Overall, 13 people played, 6 of which are from CERT (Matt Andrews, Charlie Danielson, Lisa Moore, Robert McKee, Angela Miller, and myself).  During the exercise, Robert McKee took a few pics.  We hope you enjoy them.

5/21/10 - RELAY FOR LIFE - SPARTANBURG

For the fourth consecutive time, Spartanburg CERT handled trash duty at Dorman Relay and this was our best year yet.  With our own gator and trash collection system in place, we kept the field clean the entire night.  Going nonstop from 7:00pm to 7:00am, we did it as a team.  I would like to thank the following CERT members who came out and supported this cause: Arif Chaudhary, Tony Craig, AJ Crosby, Cherise Crosby, Chantella Crosby, DJ Crosby, LJ Crosby, Sam Etheredge, Ginger Gilden, Robert McKee, Doug Nissley, and Teresa Foster.  During this event, Doug Nissley took some pictures.  We hope you enjoy them.

6/4/10 - WOODRUFF RELAY FOR LIFE

For the fourth consecutive year, Spartanburg County CERT handled trash duties and for the second consecutive year, this event was rained out.  However, I would like to thank Robert McKee, Steve Caldwell, AJ Crosby, DJ Crosby, and LJ Crosby for coming by to help with our sanitation efforts.  Once again, the gator came in handy and like always, we stayed until all of the trash had been removed.  During this event, Robert McKee took some pics.  We hope you enjoy them

6/2010 - SARFUN CLASS

For two weekends in June, the following CERT members took the SARFUN course offered by Safety Navigation and the Emergency Response Institute:  Dana Ballew, Brian Brown, Clint Carol, Cherise Crosby, Barbara Daniels, Charlie Danielson, Jackie Danielson, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien, Jerri Inglett, Jenni Inglett, Leo Lopshire, Angela Miller, and Doug Nissley

6/17/10 - LZ CLASS

Over 40 CERT members attended the second LZ Class offered by Regional One.  As always, everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the class.  During the class, Doug Nissley took some pictures.  We hope you enjoy them.

6/19/10 - MIGHTY MOO

Once again, the Spartanburg County CERT program had the honor of riding in the Mighty Moo parade.    This year, Robert Mckee, Doug Nissley and myself participated.  We hope you enjoy the pictures Doug took at this event.

7/24/10 - REGENESIS HEALTH FAIR

On 7/24, Cherise, AJ, DJ, LJ, and Chantella Crosby assisted me with the Regenesis Health Fair.  As always, this was a well organized event with great community participation.  While there, I tried to snap a few pictures of this great event.

7/28/10 - DAMAGE ASSESSMENT CLASS

SCEMD came down to teach Damage Assessment to CERT members who have an interest in assisting our Damage Assessment team during disaster situation.  I would like to thank everyone who came out and took the class and Darlene Gathers for teaching it.

8/7/10 - UPSTATE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER - HEALTH FAIR

Once again, CERT had the honor of participating in the Upstate Family Resource Center Health Fair.  This year, Tony, Doug, and myself were there on behalf of the CERT program.  Overall, it was a huge success.  We would like to thank the Upstate Family Resource Center for having us once again.

8/12/10 - YOUTH SUMMIT - HANGAR

The Youth Summit, like every year, was a huge success.  We're always honored to participate in event and enjoy the partnerships we've formed by doing so.  Needless to say, this is a great event and I can't thank everyone enough for their assistance.  As always, I have to give a special thanks to Cherise Crosby and Teresa Foster who help me with this event on an annual basis.  With that said, I hope you enjoy the few pictures I took.

8/17/10 - RED CROSS - SHELTER OPERATIONS COURSE

For the first time ever, the Red Cross offered Shelter Ops to several CERT members.  Those in attendance really enjoyed Miss Jane's presentation and overall, we now have more CERT members ready to deploy when needed for Shelter Ops.

8/25/10 -EMERGENCY RESPONDERS AND THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING

Once again, we had a great showing of CERT members at this special training event.  Actually, compared to all response agencies in attendance, the CERT program produced more attendees than any other agency.  Overall, the class was very well received and was a huge success.

9/11/10 - COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DAY

CERT helped host the 2nd Annual, Spartanburg County Community Emergency Preparedness Day at Westgate Mall.  Much better than last year, this event was well attended and publicized.  Every agency who came out did a superb job and without everyone support, a day like this could not have been possible.

9/18/10 - POINTS OF DISTRIBUTION CLASS

For the second consecutive year, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division taught CERT volunteers about PODS or Points of Distribution.  With a great turnout, we added 20 plus more CERT members to a list of already 50 plus members.  Overall, this POD training was another huge success.

9/25/10 - INMAN HARVEST DAY

Unlike last year, Inman Harvest day was not a rain out and the turnout was wonderful.  I can't thank Robert McKee, Tony Craig, and Teresa Foster enough for their assistance.  During the event, Robert McKee snapped a few photos.  Everyone is welcome to check them out and thanks again to everyone who came out.

10/2/10 - UNA FAMILY FUN DAY

For the first time ever, we were invited to UNA family fun day and it was indeed a fun day for those in the community who chose to particiapte.  Complete with free free food and entertainment for the kids, UNA FD should be proud of the effort they placed into this event.  Also, I can't thank Tony Craig enough for the effort he placed into this event as well.  While we would have like a better turnout, we were deeply pleased with the event and hope we're afforded the opportunity to participate in it again.

10/2 - 10/3 - TEEX THREAT ASSESSMENT

For the second year in a row we offered the TEEX Threat Assessment course to interested CERT members.  Those who took advantage of this opportunity were: Arif Chaudhary, Charlie Danielson, Criag Edwards, Keith Hubbard, Elizabeth Johnson, Leo Lopshire, Doug Nissley, Steven Porter, Chris Vasilenko, and Wayne Vasilenko.

11/11/10 - VETERANS DAY PARADE

Unlike most parades this year, we had one of our more attended Veterans Day Parades which was a pleasant surprise.  Photos from this parade will be added to the CERT facebook and a link will be provided above.

12/2/10 - LANDRUM CHRISTMAS PARADE

Like every year, the Landrum Christmas parade was frigid.  With this being our first parade of 2010, along with the face we had a new trailer, we didn't do overboard for this parade.  However, our float was decorated enough and those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  As always, Doug Nissley took some pics during the parade.  This year Doug made every parade and we can't thank him enough for his time and participation.

12/4/10 - INMAN CHRISTMAS PARADE

Every year the Inman Christmas parade proves to be one of the better small town parades.  While participation was down this year, the float looked good and everyone loved the snow.  During the parade, Doug took some great pics.  I hope everyone enjoys them.

12/5/10 - GREER CHRISTMAS PARADE

A better attended parade than Inman, those who joined us in Greer seemed to have fun.  Unlike previous years, we found ourselves towards the front of the line.  Therefore, the parade route did not seen quiet a long as in years past.  Also, like previous years, getting back to our cars presented a little challenge.  Regardless, we love this parade and liked being towards the front.  I hope we're afforded the opportunity to be closer to the front next year.

12/11/10 - BOILING SPRINGS CHRISTMAS PARADE

Considering how many CERT members live in the Boiling Springs area, our lack of parade turnout was a bit disappointing.  However, things went smooth this year and unlike last year, getting back to our cars did not present a challenge.  All in all, it's a great parade and we can't thank Paul enough for including us in on ut.

12/11/10 - REIDVILLE CHRISTMAS PARADE

Always one of our better attended parades, the Reidville Christmas parade is probably on of the better if not the best small town Christmas Parade you'll find in Spartanburg County (except maybe for Enoree).  As always, despite being the second parade for many,  everyone enjoyed their Reidville Parade experience.  Once again, I hope everyone enjoys the pics Doug Nissley took during this parade and all of our parades this year.

12/14/10 - SPARTANBURG CHRISTMAS PARADE

Once again, several CERT members braved through another miserable Downtown Spartanburg Christmas Parade.  However, unlike the previous two years, we had spectators to share in our misery.  With arctic temperatures and windy conditions, this parade was another Spartanburg classic.  However, despite terrible conditions, several did make it out and Doug took numerous great pics of this year's parade.

12/16/10 - CERT HOLIDAY BASH

The 2010 CERT Holiday Bash was probably one of our biggest and best Bash's yet.  With numerous gifts and door prizes, everyone who attended walked away with multiple items.  In addition, Santa made an appearance, giving all the good boys and girls an early Christmas Present (donated by KRB Consignment - Thanks Again).

During the course of the night, gifts were placed under the tree.  Spartanburg County CERT provided these gifts to a family of 6 at the Haven the following day.  A special thanks to everyone who donated to that cause and a special thanks to all the local businesses that supported the Bash (look at poster above).  Those businesses were: Hardees (Cowpens and Cedar Springs), Costco, Piccadilly, Big Daddy Hawgs, Chick-fil-a, Red Lobster, Mary's Southern Diner, Little Caesars, and the Junction.  With their assistance, CERT members who normally brought food were afforded the opportunity to purchase presents for our adopted family instead.  All in all, it was a great night.  During the event, the following CERT members were recognized for their achievements:
