The folks at Campus Place were kind enough to give us full access to their old laundry room. Basically, whatever we could use, we were encouraged to take. Once again, I cannot thank Campus Place - Extended Stay enough. They have allowed us to use their facility for exercises and now they have donated us the following items: blankets, sheets, matches, soap, deodorant, hear dryers (you never know), shower caps, phones (never know), storage rack, extension cord, pre-lit 7 1/2 ft Christmas tree (parades - 1/2 lights work), Christmas decorations (parades), sewing kits, and misc stuff for the following two CERT members: Steve Brown (lamps, furniture, etc) and Richard McAbee. In addition to CERT, Boiling Springs Baptist Church took several items for their disaster response team and Richard McAbee gave several items (mostly sheets, blankets and pillows) to Helping Hands. All in all, it was a fun treasure hunt and we cannot thank Campus Place - Extended Stay enough. |

Overall, the SAR refresher was a huge success and laid the framework for SARFUN course in the future. Numerous skills were reviewed and overall, everyone enjoyed the experience. If you weren't able to experience it yourself, please check out the great pictures Doug Nissley took. |
CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - APRIL 12-15, 2008 First, I would like to thank the following people who volunteered for this Spring's Christmas in Action project: Richard McAbee (laid out the framework, done a great job), Mary McAbee, Arif Chaudhary (helped every day), Johnny Tucker (helped every day), Ralph George (helped every day), Sam Etheredge (helped two days), Jerry Shaw (helped two days), John Peeler (helped two days), Doug Nissley, William Culver (and girlfriend), Marta Batche, Elaine Kennedy (and husband - who loaned us some great tools), Evelyn Blakley, and four additional volunteers from Spartanburg Focus on Leadership. Despite having to build around a tree and fight roots while post hole digging, everything went great. I can't thank everyone enough for coming out and participating. Please check out the pictures Doug Nissley, Ralph and myself took. This is one of the largest and most durable handicap ramps every built. |
MARY H. BRIGHT ELEMENTARY - APRIL 17, 2008 Since Red E Fox made an appearance at last year's Regenesis Health Fair, he's become a huge hit with Mary H Bright Elementary Kids. Therefore, he was asked to make a special appearance at Literacy Day. I would like to thank fellow CERT member, Teresa Foster, for incorporating CERT and Red E Fox into this great event. I hope you enjoy the pictures taken at this event (by Teresa and myself) |
PACOLET ELEMENTARY - APRIL 22, 2008 CERT and Red. E. Fox, a staple in the Pacolet Community, made a special appearance at Pacolet Elementary. All K-6 kids were brought down to the field and given an opportunity to meet various first responders. Red E Fox talked about all components of OES: Emergency Management, Fire Marshal's Office, Communications 911, ESA, HazMat, COBRA, and of course, CERT. Unfortunately, I did not take that many pictures because several teachers promised to email me theirs. Once I receive them, I will add them to this slim photo gallery. |
GREAT AMERICAN CAMPOUT - APRIL 26, 2008 The Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Great American Campout at McMillan Park in Boiling Springs. This was a well attended event and we were honored to be a very small part of it. Marge Woodruff ran a one-hour Wilderness First Aid Booth. Attending the event were CERT's own Paul Barriage and Richard Yoo. It's always great to see those guys. Feel free to check out the photos I took. |
This year's Spring Fling was the best ever (for us). This year it didn't rain and we signed up more people for CERT than ever before. Overall, 37 people signed up for future CERT classes. I would like to thank the following people for coming out and making this possible: Arif Chaudhary, Chantella Crosby, Cherise Crosby, Sam Etheredge, Doug Nissley, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate, Johnny Tucker, and Walter (from 911). Overall, it was a great, well attended event. I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley and I took. Thanks again to everyone who came out and helped. |
RELAY FOR NORTH SPARTANBURG - MAY 9, 2008 This year, CERT started their Relay efforts at the new Landrum High School. Despite several glitches, (only one dumpster, no trash liners until 9:00pm, wrong size trash liners, and a thunderstorm), things went okay. I would like to thank the following CERT members for coming out and/or participating in this year's relay for life: Ashley Humphries (was with NPE), Mary McAbee (helped set-up), Richard McAbee (helped set-up, ran Red E Fox, provided us a cart), Doug Nissley (took pictures, helped with trash, helped tear down), Richard Sabo (walked for us and his church), Dawn Shinkar (worked the booth, helped pack up), Charleen Snyder (attended), Eric Snyder (attended), and Richard Yoo (helped with the majority of trash pickup - great job Richard). Overall, things well and we're looking forward to Relay for Spartanburg. |
RELAY FOR SPARTANBURG - MAY 16, 2008 Relay for Spartanburg was bigger and better than ever. During the night, CERT picked up a lot of trash and assisted several people with First Aid needs. CONVERSE FD - GIFTED WARRIORS PROGRAM - MAY 24, 2008 This year CERT was honored to participate in this second annual Gifted Warriors Program. This was a great event with a lot of great kids. I can't thank everyone enough for coming out and taking part. In addition to CERT, 911, Cherokee Springs FD, and Drayton FD showed their support for this event. Converse FD does a great job hosting the event and they need to be commended for their efforts. I can't say enough about Joe and all of the great people at Converse FD. In addition, I can't thank my fellow CERT member Richard Yoo enough for his assistance. While Richard was there on behalf of Cherokee Springs, he took some time to assist CERT. Thanks again to Richard and all of the people who came out. I hope you enjoy the pictures I took with my camera that's performance is drastically declining (it's time to buy a new one). |
CERT - IN-SERVICE - MAY 27, 2008 While CERT In-Services really aren't special events, this one was because Doug Nissley took pictures. The In-Service Class was on airway and I think everyone who attend enjoyed the session. We cannot thank Barb and Bob Grudzien enough for teaching these courses. It was indeed a learning experience for all of us. We hope you like the pictures Doug took at this event. |
RELAY FOR WOODRUFF - JUNE 6 - 7 , 2008 Well, at Relay for Woodruff I discovered the flash does not work on my camera. For some reason the indicator light flashes until the batteries are drained. Therefore, I only got 4 daytime shots at this event. Regardless, it was a great event. I would like to thank Arif Chaudhary, Teresa Foster, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Debbie Tate, and Mike Tate for coming out. Unlike past Relay's, we didn't have to worry about trash (we had no trash can liners). Therefore, we were afforded the opportunity to leave early. With an event and CERT class the next day, I was very excited about these turn of events. Until 2:00am, we carried out First Aid Duties and played Rodeo golf. I hope you enjoy the 4 pictures I took from this event. |
MT MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH - JUNE 7, 2008 Since Mt Moriahs Community Health Awareness Day (CHAD) took place in the daytime, I was able to take pictures. Needless to day, this was a great event. I can't thank Cherise and Chantella Crosby enough for coming out and assisting. Also, I can't thank Mt Moriah enough for having us. They were great host and the free snocones was definitely a plus. If you misses this great event, please check out the pictures I took. |

The In-Service Class was on the Human Boby and I think everyone who attend enjoyed the session. We cannot thank Bob Grudzien enough for teaching these courses. It was indeed a learning experience for all of us. I hope you like the pictures. |
REGENESIS HEALTH FAIR - JULY 26, 2008 Once again, the Regenesis Health Fair is by far the best health fair in the County. You can't say enough about everyone who puts this together. Also, I can't say enough about those who come out to support CERT. For this event, Cherise, AJ, DJ, and Chantella Crosby came out and assisted with the health fair. I can' thank them enough for their support. It was also nice to see several CERT members at the Health Fair. All in all, it was a great day. I hope you enjoy the pictures we took at this event. |
HANGAR YOUTH SUMMITT - AUGUST 14, 2008 Cherise and I started early on this event. We wanted to put together a great presentation for the kids and I feel we did just that. Our presentation was so good, I had little to no time to take pictures. However, I did take a few pictures prior to and after the event. Thanks again to Cherise Crosby, Lavinia Hurley, Teresa Foster, and everyone with the Spartanburg Youth Coalition (super host - they treat their guests very well). This is one of the best events we attend. We signed up a lot of kids (thanks for writing so much Cherise) and had a blast. I hope you enjoy the few pictures I took at this great event. |

CERT IN-SERVICE - AUGUST 26, 2008 Spartanburg CERT would like to thank Officer Chad Bagwell for coming out and teaching a class on traffic control to our CERT members. Due to extremely severe weather, our turnout was lackluster. However, this was a great class and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy it. Feel free to check out a few of the picture I took. |
SPARTANBURG CREATIVE TASTE - SEPTEMBER 9, 2008 Myself, Cherise, DJ, LJ, and AJ Crosby Jr had a very busy but fun filled day at Spartanburg Creative Taste. For a first annual event, it was a huge success. I hope they follow this up next year. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to check out some of the pictures. Once again, I cannot thank Lavinia enough for incorporating CERT into so many City of Spartanburg Events. Thanks again to everyone who made this event possible. |
TASTE OF WOODRUFF - SEPTEMBER 13, 2008 After several non-eventful weeks with Red E Fox, the motor that controls his mouth burned out. Other than that, it was a great event. I can't thank Doug Nissley enough for coming out, helping setup, tear down and take pictures. Also, I can thank Mr. McAbee and Sam Etheredge enough for their assistance either. Mr. McAbee assisted with setting up, tearing down, and also provided us refreshment. Sam also helped us tear down and another booth. |
SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE - SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 Since this is the first ever Campus CERT class for Spartanburg County and frankly for the state, I thought I would take a few pictures of their Fire Suppression practical. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we're really looking forward to the full scale exercise on 10/2. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures I took of this great CERT class. |
SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE - SEPTEMBER 23, 2008 During our Simple Traige and Rapid Treatment (START) exercise , I decided to take a few pictures. Basically, we filled the room with stuffed animals and allowed the class to categorize them. Each stuffed animal had a pre-identified condition and it was up to our class to utilize the RPM method and place them in the appropriate treatment areas. This exercise, along with all the supplied, was provided by Marge Woodruff. I can't thank her, Bob, Barb, and Kathy enough for their assistance. In addition, thanks to all of the CERT members who came out to this CERT Class/In Service meeting. Without everyone's assistance, this could not have been possible |
INMAN HARVEST DAY - SEPTEMBER 27, 2008 Inman Harvest Day, like always, was a great event. This year, we set-up our booth on Main St. We were very excited about the location and had a great time. In addition, this event marked the debut of Flashy the Firedog. While not fully operational, Flashy will compliment our Red E Fox robot. As always, I can't thank the CERT volunteers who come out and assist at events. For this event, Cherise Crosby, Elaine Kennedy, Doug Nissley, and Teresa Foster assisted. In addition, it was nice to see fellow CERT members out an about like Laure Horton, Savannah Sabo, and the Tonkovic family. I hope you enjoy the pictures that Doug and I took at this great event. |
This was the second year CERT had the privilege of setting up at the Memory Walk. As always, it was a great event. I think everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank Johnny Tucker and Cherise Crosby for their assistance. Without them, I could not have set up this event by 10:00am. Also, I cannot thank them enough for helping set up the Fair display this year. Please look for our 2008 Fair pictures in the near future. Until then, I hope you enjoy the pictures I took at this great event. |
PIEDMONT INTERSTATE FAIR - OCTOBER 6-12, 2008 First, I would like to thank the Piedmont Interstate Fair for having us back for a fourth consecutive year and for the following great volunteers who made this event possible: Doug Nissley (attended every day - except the rainout day - took some great pictures and helped teardown - thanks for everything Doug), Cherise Crosby (helped setup and tear down the fair display - helped with the booth on Sunday), Elaine Kennedy (helped Monday morning and would have helped Wednesday but the rain came), Barbara Grudzien (helped with the booth on Wednesday morning despite the last minute notice), Rebecca Grudzien (helped with the booth on Wedseday morning as well), and Johnny Tucker (helped setup the booth after Memory Walk). PHILADELPHIA BAPTIST CHURCH - OCTOBER 18, 2008 Mike Tate was kind enough to sign up for this great event and work the booth all Saturday Morning. There seemed to be a great response from those who attended. I hope we can have a CERT class there in the immediate future. Feel free to check out a few pictures I took on Friday when we set up our booth. Once I get pictures from Mike, I will update this photo gallery. |
PACOLET INDIAN SUMMER FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 18, 2008 Prior to heading to Flat Rock NC for a Search & Rescue class, I setup the CERT display at the Pacolet Indian Summer Festival. With Red E Fox still not working, we utilized Flashy the Fire Dog for this event. As always, this was a great event and it brought in a great crowd. I would like to thank Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, and Doug Nissley for working the booth all day. I would also like to thank Sam Etheredge and Bill Leeder for attending the Search & Recue Course at Blue Ridge Community College. While Sam and I could not stay for the duration of the event, it was a great class. In addition, Pacolet Indian Summer Festival was a great event. Luckily Sam and I showed up in time to catch yet another Elvis Impersonator and to assist with breaking down the booth. I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley took at this great event. |
CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - OCTOBER 25, 2008 Since the rains came, we were unable to paint. However, we were able to complete the porch project and almost wrap up the bathroom project. Next Saturday we plan to paint and finish the molding around the tub. However, we made great progress and I can't thank the following people enough for assisting with this project: Paul Barriage, Arif Chaudhary, William Culver, Sam Etheredge, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien, Ralph George, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Lisa Moore (and family), Brittany Moore, Doug Nissley, and Johnny Tucker. |
FALL FESTIVAL - MORNINGSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH - OCTOBER 26, 2008 I knew when we were placed beside the free snocone and cotton candy booth, that this was going to be a great Fall Festival. While the free stuff doesn't hurt, the turnout along with the awesome assistance Johnny Tucker and Cherise Crosby provided made this a great event. While we didn't have a huge signup day, we spoke with several interested people and most importantly, had a little fun. I hope you enjoy the pictures I took at this event. Once again, I can't thank Morningside Baptist enough for having us. |
BOILING SPRINGS - FALL FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 31, 2008 Spartanburg CERT was honored to offer First Aid Support for the second straight year at the Boiling Springs First Baptist Church Fall Festival. For the most part, we addressed scrapes and bruises. However, Johnny and I did reunite a missing child with their parent. So, all in all, we had a good day. Feel free to check out the pictures Johnny (he took the pictures of us on the ride) and I took. |
CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - NOVEMBER 1, 2008 The CERT Christmas in Action team reconvened and finished what we started on 10/26. This time around, the following CERT members were able to contribute to our efforts: Tina Eller (and friend), Sam Etheredge, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Lisa Moore (and husmand), Brittany Moore, Doug Nissley, Tim Praytor, and Johnny Tucker. |
VETERANS DAY PARADE - NOVEMBER 11, 2008 Out of the three Veterans Day Parades we've participated in, this was by far the best. I would like to thank the following CERT members for helping with this year's parade efforts: Derek Bailey, Paul Barriage, Charley King, Doug Martin, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Mike Tate, and Debbie Tate. SAR FIELD EXERCISE - NOVEMBER 15-26, 2008 Saturday, our second SARFUN CERT Class finished the classroom portion of the SAR course and went to Camp Croft.
