SPECIAL EVENTS - 2008

The folks at Campus Place were kind enough to give us full access to their old laundry room.  Basically, whatever we could use, we were encouraged to take.  Once again, I cannot thank Campus Place - Extended Stay enough.  They have allowed us to use their facility for exercises and now they have donated us the following items: blankets, sheets, matches, soap, deodorant, hear dryers (you never know), shower caps, phones (never know), storage rack, extension cord, pre-lit 7 1/2 ft Christmas tree (parades - 1/2 lights work), Christmas decorations (parades), sewing kits, and misc stuff for the following two CERT members: Steve Brown (lamps, furniture, etc) and Richard McAbee.  In addition to CERT, Boiling Springs Baptist Church took several items for their disaster response team and Richard McAbee gave several items (mostly sheets, blankets and pillows) to Helping Hands.  All in all, it was a fun treasure hunt and we cannot thank Campus Place - Extended Stay enough.

Bob and Barb Grudzien done a fine job with creating this In-Service training opportunity for CERT members.  They would like to thank the following people for attending: Matt Andrews, Steve Brown, Eric Bremer, Leslie Bright, Arif Chaudhary, Bobby Grudzien, Lauren Landis, Bill Leeder, Dana Leeder, Jim McDonald, Jeri Inglet, Karri Isaac, Rick Isaac, Michael Murphy, Doug Nissley (took pictures), Tom Painter, Jerry Shaw, Dawn Shinkar, Shoe Shoemaker, Robbie Swofford, Lee Terry, Tracy Terry, Johnny Tucker, and Marge Woodruff.  All in all, it was a great class and as always, Doug Nissley took some great pictures.

CERT - SAR REFRESHER - MARCH 21 - 22, 2008

First, CERT would like to thank the following people for participating in the SAR Refresher:

Bill Leeder (Instructor), Bob Grudzien (Instructor), Steve Brown (both days Instructor), Barbara Grudzien, Doug Nissley (Photographer), Marge Woodruff, Robbie Swofford, William Culver, Lee Terry, Tracy Terry, Paul Barriage, Angela Miller, Leslie Bright, Richard Yoo, Joe Baldwin, Sylvia Varner, Joe Tonkovic, and Marie Chaney. Overall, the SAR refresher was a huge success and laid the framework for SARFUN course in the future.  Numerous skills were reviewed and overall, everyone enjoyed the experience.  If you weren't able to experience it yourself, please check out the great pictures Doug Nissley took.

CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - APRIL 12-15, 2008

First, I would like to thank the following people who volunteered for this Spring's Christmas in Action project: Richard McAbee (laid out the framework, done a great job), Mary McAbee, Arif Chaudhary (helped every day), Johnny Tucker (helped every day), Ralph George (helped every day), Sam Etheredge (helped two days), Jerry Shaw (helped two days), John Peeler (helped two days), Doug Nissley, William Culver (and girlfriend), Marta Batche, Elaine Kennedy (and husband - who loaned us some great tools), Evelyn Blakley, and four additional volunteers from Spartanburg Focus on Leadership.

Overall, the project went very well (4 days Saturday: 8:00am to 10:00pm, Sunday: 8:00am 1:00pm, Monday: 4:30pm 8:30pm, Tuesday: 4:30pm 7:30pm). Despite having to build around a tree and fight roots while post hole digging, everything went great.

I can't thank everyone enough for coming out and participating.  Please check out the pictures Doug Nissley, Ralph and myself took.  This is one of the largest and most durable handicap ramps every built.

MARY H. BRIGHT ELEMENTARY - APRIL 17, 2008

Since Red E Fox made an appearance at last year's Regenesis Health Fair, he's become a huge hit with Mary H Bright Elementary Kids.  Therefore, he was asked to make a special appearance at Literacy Day.  I would like to thank fellow CERT member, Teresa Foster, for incorporating CERT and Red E Fox into this great event.  I hope you enjoy the pictures taken at this event (by Teresa and myself)

PACOLET ELEMENTARY - APRIL 22, 2008

CERT and Red. E. Fox, a staple in the Pacolet Community, made a special appearance at Pacolet Elementary.  All K-6 kids were brought down to the field and given an opportunity to meet various first responders.  Red E Fox talked about all components of OES: Emergency Management, Fire Marshal's Office, Communications 911, ESA, HazMat, COBRA, and of course, CERT.  Unfortunately, I did not take that many pictures because several teachers promised to email me theirs.  Once I receive them, I will add them to this slim photo gallery.

GREAT AMERICAN CAMPOUT  - APRIL 26, 2008

The Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Great American Campout at McMillan Park in Boiling Springs.  This was a well attended event and we were honored to be a very small part of it.  Marge Woodruff ran a one-hour Wilderness First Aid Booth.  Attending the event were CERT's own Paul Barriage and Richard Yoo.  It's always great to see those guys.  Feel free to check out the photos I took.

SPRING FLING - MAY 3-4, 2008

This year's Spring Fling was the best ever (for us).  This year it didn't rain and we signed up more people for CERT than ever before.  Overall, 37 people signed up for future CERT classes.  I would like to thank the following people for coming out and making this possible: Arif Chaudhary, Chantella Crosby, Cherise Crosby, Sam Etheredge, Doug Nissley, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate, Johnny Tucker, and Walter (from 911).  Overall, it was a great, well attended event.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley and I took.  Thanks again to everyone who came out and helped.

RELAY FOR NORTH SPARTANBURG - MAY 9, 2008

This year, CERT started their Relay efforts at the new Landrum High School.  Despite several glitches, (only one dumpster, no trash liners until 9:00pm, wrong size trash liners, and a thunderstorm), things went okay.  I would like to thank the following CERT members for coming out and/or participating in this year's relay for life: Ashley Humphries (was with NPE), Mary McAbee (helped set-up), Richard McAbee (helped set-up, ran Red E Fox, provided us a cart), Doug Nissley (took pictures, helped with trash, helped tear down), Richard Sabo (walked for us and his church), Dawn Shinkar (worked the booth, helped pack up), Charleen Snyder (attended), Eric Snyder (attended), and Richard Yoo (helped with the majority of trash pickup - great job Richard).  Overall, things well and we're looking forward to Relay for Spartanburg.

RELAY FOR SPARTANBURG - MAY 16, 2008

Relay for Spartanburg was bigger and better than ever.  During the night, CERT picked up a lot of trash and assisted several people with First Aid needs.  All in all, it was a great, yet chilly night.  I would like to thank the following people for coming out and assisting with such a great cause:  Arif Chaudhary, AJ Crosby, Chantella Crosby, Cherise Crosby, DJ Crosby, LJ Crosby, William Culver, Jared Foster, Teresa Foster, Bruce Hurry, Kathy Hurry, Lyn Lamb, Bill Leeder, Dana Leeder, Richard McAbee, Doug Nissley, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate, Beverly Tonkovic, Joe Tonkovic, Robin Tonkovic, and Richard Yoo. I can't thank everyone enough for coming out.  I especially have to thank: Hardees for the food (Mike and Debbie Tate); Bill Leeder and Cherise Crosby for manning the First Aid station late into the night; and my trash assistants (Richard Yoo, William Culver, and Teresa Foster) for staying up all night.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley and I took at this event.

CONVERSE FD - GIFTED WARRIORS PROGRAM - MAY 24, 2008

This year CERT was honored to participate in this second annual Gifted Warriors Program.  This was a great event with a lot of great kids.  I can't thank everyone enough for coming out and taking part.  In addition to CERT, 911, Cherokee Springs FD, and Drayton FD showed their support for this event.  Converse FD does a great job hosting the event and they need to be commended for their efforts.  I can't say enough about Joe and all of the great people at Converse FD.  In addition, I can't thank my fellow CERT member Richard Yoo enough for his assistance.  While Richard was there on behalf of Cherokee Springs, he took some time to assist CERT.   Thanks again to Richard and all of the people who came out.  I hope you enjoy the pictures I took with my camera that's performance is drastically declining (it's time to buy a new one).

CERT - IN-SERVICE - MAY 27, 2008

While CERT In-Services really aren't special events, this one was because Doug Nissley took pictures.  The In-Service Class was on airway and I think everyone who attend enjoyed the session.  We cannot thank Barb and Bob Grudzien enough for teaching these courses.  It was indeed a learning experience for all of us.  We hope you like the pictures Doug took at this event.

RELAY FOR WOODRUFF - JUNE 6 - 7 , 2008

Well, at Relay for Woodruff I discovered the flash does not work on my camera.  For some reason the indicator light flashes until the batteries are drained.  Therefore, I only got 4 daytime shots at this event.  Regardless, it was a great event.  I would like to thank Arif Chaudhary, Teresa Foster, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Debbie Tate, and Mike Tate for coming out.  Unlike past Relay's, we didn't have to worry about trash (we had no trash can liners).  Therefore, we were afforded the opportunity to leave early.  With an event and CERT class the next day, I was very excited about these turn of events.  Until 2:00am, we carried out First Aid Duties and played Rodeo golf.  I hope you enjoy the 4 pictures I took from this event.

MT MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH - JUNE 7, 2008

Since Mt Moriahs Community Health Awareness Day (CHAD) took place in the daytime, I was able to take pictures.  Needless to day, this was a great event.  I can't thank Cherise and Chantella Crosby enough for coming out and assisting.  Also, I can't thank Mt Moriah enough for having us.  They were great host and the free snocones was definitely a plus.  If you misses this great event, please check out the pictures I took.

MIGHTY MOO FESTIVAL AND PARADE - JUNE 14, 2008

The 2008 Mighty Moo festival was another big hit for the town of Cowpens.  For CERT, it was our third time participating in the festival and our second time participating in the parade.  I would like to thank the following people for coming out to Mighty Moo Parade: Eric Bremer, Alan Caldwell, William Culver, Lyn Lamb, Doug Martin, Justin Mathis, and Doug Nissley.  In addition, I would like to thank Lyn Lamb and Alan Caldwell for staying after the parade and working Red E Fox. All in all, it was a great event.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley and I took at the 2008 Might Moo Parade and Festival.

CERT IN-SERVICE - HAM RADIO/GPS - JUNE 24, 2008

Bob Grudizen conducted our first Ham Radio/GPS in-Service Class.  This was a very productive class.  I would like to thank Bob for teaching the course and the Upstate Family Resource Center for hosting it.  In addition, I would like to thank the following CERT members for taking the time to participate in this In-Service project: Paul Barriage, Ted Button, Wendell Button, Teresa Foster, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien, Bruce Hurry, Bill Leeder, Dana Leeder, Robert McKee, Angela Miller, Lisa Moore, Brittany Moore, Michael Murphy, Gary Wofford, and Marge Woodruff.  Since Doug Nissley was unable to attend this class, I took a few pics with the new CERT camera.  I hope you enjoy them.

BIG LOTS PREPAREDNESS FAIR - JUNE 28, 2008

The Big Lots Preparedness Fair was a success.  I would like to thank Big lots for their hospitality (free drinks and hotdogs).  In addition, I would like to thank Mike and Debbie Tate for their assistance.  I hope you enjoy the few pics I took at this event.

AFL HEALTH FAIR - JULY 8, 2008

First, I would like to thank Bob Grudzien for getting us signed up for the AFL Health Fair and Barbara Grudzien for manning the booth.  This was a great event and we hope it might open some doors for us in the future.  With that said, feel free to check out the photos I took at this event.

KICKBALL TOURNAMENT - JULY 19, 2008

The Spartanburg County CERT Kickball Team had the please of playing in the first ever Parks and Recreation Kickball Tournament.  While we didn't win the tournament, it was a lot of fun.  I would like to thank the following people for participating: William Culver, Samuel Etheredge, Jared Foster, Ben Grudzien, Richard Hyder, Jeri Inglett, Jessica Inglett,  Dacia Moore, Patricia Rice, George Spehar, Johnny Tucker and Karmilla Williams.  While we didn't win, we were fortunate enough to get some great press coverage.  Feel free to check that out along with the photo gallery.

COUNTY COUNCIL - RECOGNIZES NDMS PARTICIPANTS - JULY 21, 2008

Spartanburg County Council recognized the efforts of those who participated in the Region IV NDMS Dirty Bomb Exercise in the form of a resolution.  Feel free to check out the pictures Johnny Lewis and I took.  Thanks again to everyone who made this possible.  Every CERT member who participated in this event should be proud.

IN-SERVICE - HUMAN BODY - JULY 22, 2008

While CERT In-Services really aren't special events, I took pictures so I decided to post them.  The In-Service Class was on the Human Boby and I think everyone who attend enjoyed the session.  We cannot thank Bob Grudzien enough for teaching these courses.  It was indeed a learning experience for all of us.  I hope you like the pictures.

REGENESIS HEALTH FAIR - JULY 26, 2008

Once again, the Regenesis Health Fair is by far the best health fair in the County.  You can't say enough about everyone who puts this together.  Also, I can't say enough about those who come out to support CERT.  For this event, Cherise, AJ, DJ, and Chantella Crosby came out and assisted with the health fair.  I can' thank them enough for their support.  It was also nice to see several CERT members at the Health Fair.  All in all, it was a great day.  I hope you enjoy the pictures we took at this event.

HANGAR YOUTH SUMMITT - AUGUST 14, 2008

Cherise and I started early on this event.  We wanted to put together a great presentation for the kids and I feel we did just that.  Our presentation was so good, I had little to no time to take pictures.  However, I did take a few pictures prior to and after the event.

Thanks again to Cherise Crosby, Lavinia Hurley, Teresa Foster, and everyone with the Spartanburg Youth Coalition (super host - they treat their guests very well).  This is one of the best events we attend.  We signed up a lot of kids (thanks for writing so much Cherise) and had a blast.  I hope you enjoy the few pictures I took at this great event.

SUMMER BASH - AUGUST 16, 2008

The 2008 Summer Bash was the best yet.  Everyone who attended seemed to really enjoy themselves.  I would like to thank the following people for attending/assisting:

Matt Andrews (thanks for providing sound and entertainment - When Pigs Fly Productions), Tony Barnett (Fire Marshal's Office - Brought the Grill), Sgt. Ted Beaty (Sheriff's Office - Great job on the boat rides), Doug Bryson (EM Coordinator), Ann Bryson, Marie Chaney, Arif Chaudhary (and wife), Bruce Cook, Shelly Jo Cook, Robert Craig, Cherise Crosby, Chantella Crosby, Anthony Crosby Jr, Lyndell Crosby, William Culver, Sam Etheredge (thanks for the help with the boat and Jet Ski), Joy Eubanks, Teresa Foster, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien (thanks for taking pictures), Rebecca Grudzien, Elaine Gutierrez, Jorge Gutierrez, Kathy Hurry (thanks for being such a great hostess), Bruce Hurry, Lynn Lamb (and guest), Asst Chief Brent Lewis (NSFD), Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Tammy McCraw (and daughter), Rick McCraw, Michael Murphy, Doug Nissley (and Chelsey - thanks for taking great pictures), Rick Sabo (thanks for cooking), Savannah Sabo, Tony Scruggs (and boy), Dawn Shinkar (thanks for helping prepare food), Eric Snyder, Jaaron Snyder, Charleen Snyder, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate (thanks for the ice, mayo, ketchup, rodeo golf, etc), Lee Terry, Tracy Terry, Ruby Timmons, Joe Tonkovic, Beverly Tonkovic (thanks for helping prepare the food), Robin Tonkovic, Darrian Tonkovic (w/grandmother), Johnny Tucker (thanks for the help with the boat and Jet Ski), and Marge Woodruff.

For those who were not able to make it or would like to reminisce, feel free to check out the photos my Stepfather, Doug, and Bob took.  I would also like to thank my mother for coming out and helping.  She done an awesome job as did everyone.  Thanks again to everyone for coming out and making the 2008 Summer Bash the best ever.

CERT IN-SERVICE - AUGUST 26, 2008

Spartanburg CERT would like to thank Officer Chad Bagwell for coming out and teaching a class on traffic control to our CERT members.  Due to extremely severe weather, our turnout was lackluster.  However, this was a great class and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy it.  Feel free to check out a few of the picture I took.

SPARTANBURG CREATIVE TASTE - SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

Myself, Cherise, DJ, LJ, and AJ Crosby Jr had a very busy but fun filled day at Spartanburg Creative Taste.  For a first annual event, it was a huge success.  I hope they follow this up next year.  If you were unable to attend, please feel free to check out some of the pictures.  Once again, I cannot thank Lavinia enough for incorporating CERT into so many City of Spartanburg Events.  Thanks again to everyone who made this event possible.

TASTE OF WOODRUFF - SEPTEMBER 13, 2008

After several non-eventful weeks with Red E Fox, the motor that controls his mouth burned out.  Other than that, it was a great event.  I can't thank Doug Nissley enough for coming out, helping setup, tear down and take pictures.  Also, I can thank Mr. McAbee and Sam Etheredge enough for their assistance either.  Mr.  McAbee assisted with setting up, tearing down, and also provided us refreshment.  Sam also helped us tear down and another booth.  Thanks again to everyone who came out and supported CERT at this event.  I hope you enjoy the great pictures Doug Nissley took at this event.

MILLIKEN HEALTH FAIR - SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

Spartanburg CERT had the privelage of setting up at the Milliken Health Fair for the second year in a row.  I can't thank Marie Chaney enough for inviting us back and being such a gracious.  I hope everyone enjoys a few of the pictures I took at this great event.

SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE - SEPTEMBER 18, 2008

Since this is the first ever Campus CERT class for Spartanburg County and frankly for the state, I thought I would take a few pictures of their Fire Suppression practical.  Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we're really looking forward to the full scale exercise on 10/2.  In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures I took of this great CERT class.

SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE - SEPTEMBER 23, 2008

During our Simple Traige and Rapid Treatment (START) exercise , I decided to take a few pictures.  Basically, we filled the room with stuffed animals and allowed the class to categorize them.  Each stuffed animal had a pre-identified condition and it was up to our class to utilize the RPM method and place them in the appropriate treatment areas.  This exercise, along with all the supplied, was provided by Marge Woodruff.  I can't thank her, Bob, Barb, and Kathy enough for their assistance.  In addition, thanks to all of the CERT members who came out to this CERT Class/In Service meeting.  Without everyone's assistance, this could not have been possible

INMAN HARVEST DAY - SEPTEMBER 27, 2008

Inman Harvest Day, like always, was a great event.  This year, we set-up our booth on Main St.  We were very excited about the location and had a great time.  In addition, this event marked the debut of Flashy the Firedog.  While not fully operational, Flashy will compliment our Red E Fox robot.  As always, I can't thank the CERT volunteers who come out and assist at events.  For this event, Cherise Crosby, Elaine Kennedy, Doug Nissley, and Teresa Foster assisted.  In addition, it was nice to see fellow CERT members out an about like Laure Horton, Savannah Sabo, and the Tonkovic family.  I hope you enjoy the pictures that Doug and I took at this great event.

MEMORY WALK - OCTOBER 2, 2008

This was the second year CERT had the privilege of setting up at the Memory Walk.  As always, it was a great event.  I think everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  I would like to thank Johnny Tucker and Cherise Crosby for their assistance.  Without them, I could not have set up this event by 10:00am.  Also, I cannot thank them enough for helping set up the Fair display this year.  Please look for our 2008 Fair pictures in the near future.  Until then, I hope you enjoy the pictures I took at this great event.

PIEDMONT INTERSTATE FAIR - OCTOBER 6-12, 2008

First, I would like to thank the Piedmont Interstate Fair for having us back for a fourth consecutive year and for the following great volunteers who made this event possible: Doug Nissley (attended every day - except the rainout day - took some great pictures and helped teardown - thanks for everything Doug), Cherise Crosby (helped setup and tear down the fair display - helped with the booth on Sunday), Elaine Kennedy (helped Monday morning and would have helped Wednesday but the rain came), Barbara Grudzien (helped with the booth on Wednesday morning despite the last minute notice), Rebecca Grudzien (helped with the booth on Wedseday morning as well), and Johnny Tucker (helped setup the booth after Memory Walk).  In addition to our great CERT Volunteers, I would like to thank Walter Canty with Communication 911 for attending three nights of the fair.  Walter, as did everyone, done a great job.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug and I took.  We are already looking forward to the 2009 Piedmont Interstate Fair.

PHILADELPHIA BAPTIST CHURCH - OCTOBER 18, 2008

Mike Tate was kind enough to sign up for this great event and work the booth all Saturday Morning.  There seemed to be a great response from those who attended.  I hope we can have a CERT class there in the immediate future.  Feel free to check out a few pictures I took on Friday when we set up our booth.  Once I get pictures from Mike, I will update this photo gallery.

PACOLET INDIAN SUMMER FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 18, 2008

Prior to heading to Flat Rock NC for a Search & Rescue class, I setup the CERT display at the Pacolet Indian Summer Festival.  With Red E Fox still not working, we utilized Flashy the Fire Dog for this event.  As always, this was a great event and it brought in a great crowd.  I would like to thank Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, and Doug Nissley for working the booth all day.  I would also like to thank Sam Etheredge and Bill Leeder for attending the Search & Recue Course at Blue Ridge Community College.  While Sam and I could not stay for the duration of the event, it was a great class.  In addition, Pacolet Indian Summer Festival was a great event.  Luckily Sam and I showed up in time to catch yet another Elvis Impersonator and to assist with breaking down the booth.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley took at this great event.

CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - OCTOBER 25, 2008

Since the rains came, we were unable to paint.  However, we were able to complete the porch project and almost wrap up the bathroom project.  Next Saturday we plan to paint and finish the molding around the tub.  However, we made great progress and I can't thank the following people enough for assisting with this project: Paul Barriage, Arif Chaudhary, William Culver, Sam Etheredge, Barbara Grudzien, Bob Grudzien, Ralph George, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Lisa Moore (and family), Brittany Moore, Doug Nissley, and Johnny Tucker.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley took at our 4th Christmas in Action Project.

FALL FESTIVAL - MORNINGSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH -  OCTOBER 26, 2008

I knew when we were placed beside the free snocone and cotton candy booth, that this was going to be a great Fall Festival.  While the free stuff doesn't hurt, the turnout along with the awesome assistance Johnny Tucker and Cherise Crosby provided made this a great event.  While we didn't have a huge signup day, we spoke with several interested people and most importantly, had a little fun.  I hope you enjoy the pictures I took at this event.  Once again, I can't thank Morningside Baptist enough for having us.

BOILING SPRINGS - FALL FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 31, 2008

Spartanburg CERT was honored to offer First Aid Support for the second straight year at the Boiling Springs First Baptist Church Fall Festival.  Like last year, this event was a huge success.  I would like to thank for the following CERT members for coming out and providing First Aid to the Boiling Springs Community:  Antonio Craig, Sam Etheredge, Douglas Martin, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Tommy Painter, Sybil Painter, Debbie Tate, Michael Tate, Joe Tonkovic, Beverly Tonkovic, Robin Tonkovic, and Johnny Tucker.  For the most part, we addressed scrapes and bruises.  However, Johnny and I did reunite a missing child with their parent.  So, all in all, we had a good day.  Feel free to check out the pictures Johnny (he took the pictures of us on the ride) and I took.

CHRISTMAS IN ACTION - NOVEMBER 1, 2008

The CERT Christmas in Action team reconvened and finished what we started on 10/26.  This time around, the following CERT members were able to contribute to our efforts: Tina Eller (and friend), Sam Etheredge, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Lisa Moore (and husmand), Brittany Moore, Doug Nissley, Tim Praytor, and Johnny Tucker.  On this day we painted the house, porch, foundation, and finished the bathroom.  Feel free to check out the pictures Doug took.  Please note the following: the owner chose light yellow for their house color and it came out yellow.

VETERANS DAY PARADE - NOVEMBER 11, 2008

Out of the three Veterans Day Parades we've participated in, this was by far the best.  I would like to thank the following CERT members for helping with this year's parade efforts: Derek Bailey, Paul Barriage, Charley King, Doug Martin, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Mike Tate, and Debbie Tate.  I hope everyone enjoys the pictures Doug Martin and Mike Tate took at this great event.

SAR FIELD EXERCISE - NOVEMBER 15-26, 2008

Saturday, our second SARFUN CERT Class finished the classroom portion of the SAR course and went to Camp Croft.  Overall, everyone seemed very pleased with the course Denver Holder and Safety Navigation conducted.  During their field training, I took some great pictures of the following CERT members in action: Matt Andrews, Mike Carkhuff, Bruce Cook, Antonio Craig, Tim Jamison, Jerry Lacock, Dana Leeder, Doug Martin, Robert McKee, Angela Miller, and Beverly Tonkovic.  Despite the freezing cold temperatures and unbearable wind-chill, our CERT members made their primitive shelters and roughed the night out.  All in all, it was a great exercise and I hope you enjoy the pictures I took.

COWPENS CHRISTMAS PARADE - NOVEMBER 30, 2008

Despite the fact it rained several inches on the weekend and was raining up until about an hour before the parade, the Town of Cowpens marched forward with their 2008 Cowpens Christmas Parade.  Despite being uncharacteristically short, their was a decent turnout.  I would like to thank Arif Chaudhary, Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, and Doug Nissley for coming out on such a dreary day.  While we were able to participate, several circumstances prevented us from decorating the float like we desire.  Nevertheless, we move forward and finished the parade.  I hope everyone enjoys the pictures Doug Nissley and Herald Journal took of the parade.

LANDRUM CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 4, 2008

While we were once again victimized by the weather, the rain held to a steady mist and we were able to particiapte in Landrum Christmas Parade.  Despite a cold and chilly day, Doug Martin, Richard McAbee, and Mary McAbee rode in the float.  While we still were unable to complete the float, the several hours I spent the night before pre-wiring it and setting up the outside decorations paid off.  Feel free to take a look at the pictures Doug Martin and I took at this event.  Needless to say, we're not photographers :)

INMAN CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 6, 2008

Once again, the Inman Christmas Parade did not disappoint.  This is always a great parade with a great crowd.  I would like to thank the following CERT members for coming out and riding on the float: Arif Chaudhary, Matthew Christopher, Elaine Kennedy (& husband), Doug Nissley (& Courtney), and Johnny Tucker.  While it was a little cold, all in all, everyone who attended had fun.  I hope you enjoy the 4 pictures Matthew Christopher took and the pictures that Doug Nissley took.

GREER CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 7, 2008

Unlike last year, we had enough people to make the float seem somewhat full.  With bad weather hindering the crowd at the Downtown Spartanburg Parade, I feel this was the best attended parade of 2008 (in Spartanburg County).  I would like to thank Matt Andrews (& child), Sam Etheredge, Doug Nissley (& kids), Debbie Tate, and Mike Tate.  I hope everyone enjoys the pictures that Doug Nissley and Debbie Tate took at the parade.

SPARTANBURG CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 9, 2008

Needless to say, the Spartanburg Christmas Parade was disappointing this year.  Their rain or shine policy resulted in a lower crowd turnout and no televised coverage of the parade (as normally done by WSPA and aired on Christmas Day).  Regardless, this was still a great parade and those who participated seemed to have fun.  While the rain kept away many of our parade float riders, the following CERT member braved the conditions and rode on the Spartanburg County CERT Float: Antonio Craig, Teresa Foster (& grandkids), Elaine Gutierrez, Jorge Gutierrez, Charley King, Harvey Lux, Justin Mathis, Diane Maybin (& family), Richard McAbee, Mary McAbee, Doug Nissley (and kids), Robert McKee, Debbie Tate, Mike Tate, and Johnny Tucker.  As always, thanks to everyone who showed up.  While this was not a televised event (I can't remember the last time it wasn't), below is a 6 minute clip WSPA released (CERT is at the 2:11 - 2:15 mark):

PACOLET CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 13, 2008

Despite an initial mix-up with the Parade lineup, the Pacolet Christmas Parade went pretty smooth.  Always unique, this year was no exception.  I hope enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley took  during this 3 mile parade route.  I can't thank the following volunteers enough for braving the frigid cold temperatures and participating in this parade: Antonio Craig, Sam Etheredge, Doug Martin, Doug Nissley, and Johnny Tucker.

REIDVILLE CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 13, 2008

Following a quick meal at Mike Tate's Hardees, four of the five of the six Pacolet Parade participants left to meet up with Doug Nissley at Reidville Fire Department.  Incorporating new tree transportation methods, the entire float was setup in 5 minutes.  Therefore, we had 45 minutes to look at muscle cars and tractors.  Once the parade started, we were greeted by great crowds.  As always, the town of Reidville throws a great parade.  I can' thank the following volunteers enough for being part of it: Antonio Craig, Sam Etheredge, Doug Martin, Doug Nissley, and Johnny Tucker.  I hope you enjoy the pictures Doug Nissley took of this great hometown parade.

WOODRUFF CHRISTMAS PARADE - DECEMBER 14, 2008

The final parade of the year was probably our best presentation of the year.  The snow maker finally worked (despite the fact that I accidentally broke it after the parade) and we had a full float.  Despite an initial battery glitch, I think everything went well.  As always, thanks to the following CERT volunteers who showed up for the Woodruff Christmas Parade: Antonio Craig, Sam Etheredge, Teresa Foster (and grandchild), Doug Nissley, Mike Tate, Debbie Tate (and grandchild), and Johnny Tucker.  I hope everyone enjoys the pictures Doug Nissley took during this great parade.

CERT HOLIDAY BASH - DECEMBER 16, 2008

Once again, Ken Tuck and the Spartanburg Water System was kind enough to let us utilize the Rainbow Lake Pavilion for our fourth annual Holiday Bash.   With over 130 in attendance, it was a huge success.  I would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions:

  • Big Daddy Hawgs - Baked Beans

  • Chick-fil-a - Eastside - 50% discount on wings and free nuggets

  • Hardees - Mike & Debbie Tate - Cups, Condiments, etc

  • Fatz Cafe - 50% Discount on Mash Potatoes

  • When Pigs Fly Productions - Sound/Matt Andrews

Since around 90 or so CERT members attended, I'm not going to list everyone.  However, I would like to thank everyone who came out and supported CERT throughout the year.  At this year's Bash we recognized the following volunteers:

Everyone who attended received the new CERT book bag to replace the lesser quality bag we began the program with along with a Spartanburg CERT T-Shirt.  If you missed this year's Bash, please take a moment to look at the pictures Doug Nissley and other CERT Members took.  For those who were omitted from the awards above, I'm working to resolve that issue.  As always, thanks for supporting the Spartanburg CERT program and Happy Holidays.
